CMS launches “Cybersecurity Toolkit” for media companies at 2017 CASBAA Convention in Macau

Macau, 07 Nov. In response to the unprecedented number of cyber-attacks against the media industry, international law firm CMS today announced the launch of a “Cybersecurity Toolkit” for media and entertainment companies at CASBAA*, the annual gathering of media industry leaders and regulators from across Asia-Pacific.

International cyber-criminals, hacktivists, terrorist groups and even nation states are targeting the media industry’s valuable intellectual property rights, data and distribution networks. From attacks on infrastructure, taking channels off air, through to leaks of unreleased movies or TV shows and the distribution of malware and false information via media networks, the media industry is facing a growing range of threats.

The CMS toolkit is designed to help companies prepare for and respond to these cybersecurity threats. It is designed as a practical and actionable guide, with a four-pillar approach that media companies can put in place to prepare and respond. From understanding the key legal and regulatory obligations to which media companies are subject through to building an organisation-wide cybersecurity strategy and responding when a breach occurs, the toolkit leverages CMS’s international experience of advising media companies on their cybersecurity strategy.

Head of Commercial and TMT at CMS Singapore Matt Pollins explained the rationale for launching the toolkit: “We are launching this toolkit to meet a growing demand amongst media companies for practical, media industry-specific advice on cybersecurity. Our international Media team has witnessed first-hand the cybersecurity threats facing the industry and the damaging impact that cybersecurity incidents can have on organisations. The toolkit is designed to help. Our goal is to provide a practical set of tools that media companies can action right now to prepare for and respond to this growing cybersecurity threat. This toolkit is an industry first and we hope it will provide a new benchmark for media organisations to work from”.

Managing Partner of CMS Singapore, Andrew Stott elaborates on the significance of cybersecurity and CMS’s role: "We know that cybersecurity is one of the biggest challenges that our media clients face. The issue has shifted in recent years from being a legal and compliance responsibility to being a board level priority. Our team in APAC and the wider firm is pleased to be helping global clients address this global problem. Being a firm with global coverage means that we are well positioned to work with clients on global issues drawing on our practice strength in commercial and risk-advisory as well as depth of sector expertise in media and technology."
